• ELECTIONS! Thanks to all of you who were nominated for Students for Global Health Board positions. Results of the election will be sent out via e-mail sometime next week.
• Quesadilla night was a huge success, so thanks everyone for coming out and showing your support!
• On Sunday, May 20th SGH will be holding its second community-wide garage sale! This time the event will be held at Sarra’s house on 18th and Harris Street. Please remember to bring any and all items you’d like to get rid of to the meeting next Wednesday.
• On Thursday, May 17th SGH will be tabling as a part of the annual University Day festivities. Tabling is open from 8 AM-4 PM, so sign up and help out if you have any available time.
• On May 19th the HIV Alliance is hosting its annual AIDS Walk. Register here as an individual or a team.
• Remember that if you’re interested in writing an article or segment on any issue in social justice or global health, copies must be given to Maithri by May 21st at the latest. Current topics that have already been chosen can be found here.

• For all those who went to Seattle for the Western Regional International Health Conference, refund forms are available in the ASUO controller’s office and should be filled out and returned to the same office sometime this week. If anyone happened to miss the conference you can get all of the conference details here and catch up on what you missed.
• Want to write an article or segment for the Students for Global Health “zine”? Interested individuals can choose any topic within the field of global health or social justice and write a brief description to be included in a pamphlet that will be distributed during the event on May 31st. Contact Violet if you feel like getting creative!

• SGH board positions are up for elections! This week we’ll be tallying up nominations for each respective position, and at the next meeting every present member  will get a chance to vote on who seems most fit to be a board member. You can nominate group members here.

Professor R. Glen Mitterman (International Studies Adjunct Professor)

• Worked for 22 years at the United Nations: Environmental Law, Office of Drugs and Crime, Aid and Development
• International Studies Department at the University of Oregon is attempting to strengthen its health and development focus
• “The global consensus is the greatest strength and greatest weakness of the United Nations.”
• Was involved in creating the treaty concerning trans-national dumping of hazardous waste accordingly
• The United Nations Millennium Development Goals are based on the health of global populations

• For those interested in getting a head-start on what we’ll be learning this weekend at the Western Regional International Health Conference, check out the conference schedule here. Next week we’ll be going over more extensively some of the conference details, so be sure to come out to the meeting on Wednesday!
• The Spring Concert has been moved to June 1st due to conflicting events at the student co-ops.
• Quesadilla Night will be taking place next Saturday, May 5th at the Wesley Center from 10 PM- 1 AM. Come and help make quesadillas to benefit the Nyamirama Health Center if you can!
• The ASUO Street Fair will be taking place this week, May 2nd- May 5th and SGH is hoping to table. Come to the meeting on Wednesday for more details of how you can help out!

Agenda

When faced with limited financial funds, is it more important to focus your time and money on treatment or prevention?

• In focusing on treatment you will ultimately keep the disease from spreading further
• Keeping the mentality of healthcare as a universal human right, you cannot ignore affected populations
• With preventative methods you can effectively reach more people with the funds available (education, awareness, outreach, etc.)
• Problems: prevention is hard to sell, politicians often go for treatment, issue of HIV/AIDS has become much more political and is an extremely emotional issue

Nina Sobotka: FACE AIDS Ride Against Aids 2012 (Overview)

• Individual riders must raise $5,000 to benefit FACE AIDS by the end of the trip
• Funds raised go directly to existing FACE AIDS programs in Rwanda
• Riders will be giving presentations about HIV/AIDS and the FACE AIDS programs to: high schools, churches, community centers.

Check out the FACE AIDS website to learn more about this exciting opportunity to bike across the country while simultaneously informing populations about the issue of HIV/AIDS. Special thanks to Nina for her commitment to FACE AIDS and her informative presentation!

Welcome to the last term of Students for Global Health for the 2011-2012 school year! Spring term promises to be packed with events, so if you’re looking to get more involved this is a great time to see what more you can do as an SGH club member.

Announcements

• If you still haven’t registered for the annual Western Regional International Health Conference follow the link and decide whether or not this exciting event is something that you’d like to be a part of. This year’s conference focuses on some of the many topics in global health that often don’t gain widespread public recognition. If you’re registered already hang out after next meeting so we can plan transportation options!
• Make sure to check out the CAER conference this Saturday if you have time! Registration isn’t necessary and free food will be provided courtesy of Ratatouille.
• Interested in trying to figure out a way Students for Global Health can be represented in the upcoming Earth Week festivities? Come to the buzz at 5 PM on Sunday, April 8th to brainstorm potential ideas for SGH involvement.

• Heard of Partners in Health? If you’re an active SGH member the answer to the question is already obvious. For the year of 2012 PIH is implementing the distribution of an oral cholera vaccine to individuals in Haiti who have been exposed to this waterborne illness. Take a look at their campaign page to gain a better understanding of the work that PIH hopes to do in this upcoming year.
• As always, remember to stay up-to-date with the FACE AIDS campaign for the renovation of the Nyamirama Health Center in Rwanda.
• Dr. Jim Yong Kim, co-founder of Partners in Health, was recently nominated by President Obama as the new head of the World Bank. For an international organization with such a contentious history, electing a figure such as Dr. Kim promises a step in the right direction for the future of the World Bank. Head over to the videos page to watch President Obama introduce the newly appointed Dr. Kim.

Everyone remember that there will be an introductory potluck on Saturday, April 14th! All members are encouraged to come, and further details will be discussed at next week’s meeting.

• On Friday, March 2nd the Cowfish Lounge and Dance Club is throwing a benefit for the Eugene HIV Alliance. Support your local community while simultaneously breaking it down on the dance floor!
• Are you thinking about going to the Western Regional International Health Conference? If you haven’t already, check out their website to get a better understanding of what will be taking place during the weekend of April 27-29th.
• On Friday, March 2nd all those interested should come to the Food for Lane County Distribution Center to assist in the packaging of food items that will be redistributed to the Lane County community.

“Ecuaexperience: Help, Learn, Discover”

• International volunteer program that lasts 28 days
• Emphasis on grassroots development; not charity!
• Created 22 houses in Ecuador in 2011
• You control every financial aspect of the trip: fundraising–>buying supplies–>building homes
• Work hours: 7 AM- 6 PM
• After first two weeks of the program you are given the opportunity to “discover” Ecuador with parasailing, surfing, hiking, and more!

Remember to come out to the Students for Global Health Garage Sale this Sunday from 10 AM- 2 PM. 100% of the proceeds go to the Nyamirama Health Center, so be sure to tell as many people as you can! The garage sale will be taking place at 820 E 26th Avenue, 97405.

Announcements

• On February 28th the African Lecture Series will be hosting Stephen Dueppen, a professor of Anthropology who will be speaking on “Spiritual Leadership and Dispersed Power in Prehistoric Burkina Faso.” The lecture begins at 1 PM in the Mills International so be sure to be on time if you plan on attending.
• Visiting professor Cynthia Bejarano will be presenting on the subject of “Terrorizing Women: Feminicide and Gender Violence at The U.S.-Mexico Borderlands” on the same date from 3-4:30 PM at the Knight Library Browsing Room. Follow the link to gain more information.
• Saturday, March 10th marks the date for the SGH fundraiser at Qdoba Mexican Grill. For the entirety of the day Qdoba will be donating 20% of proceeds to Partners in Health, so make sure to tell everyone you know to show up for this amazing fundraiser! Fliers will be handed out next meeting.

The Students for Global Health community-wide garage sale will be taking place this Sunday, March 4th at 820 East 26th Avenue. The garage sale starts at 9 AM and will go until 2 PM, so ask everyone you know for potential items for donation if at all possible. Bring any and all items for donation to this week’s meeting at 7 PM in Gerlinger 246! Otherwise, drop off donations at the location of the garage sale anytime from now until Sunday.

“Medical Internships Beyond Borders” (Overview)

Bolivia

• Worked as a volunteer in urban and rural medicine through the IE3 Internship program.
• Major health concerns: diabetes, dental, dengue fever, yellow fever, malaria, chagas
• Chagas is a parasitic disease transmitted through the feces of the “kissing bug;” affects 10-20 million people worldwide

Dominican Republic

• Worked as a volunteer with Orphanage Outreach
• Taught public health at an elementary school
• “Price of Sugar” documentary

• Students for Global Health will be having our community-wide garage sale on March 4th at a location that is still to be determined. If you can, look around your house for any items that you’re willing to part with- all proceeds benefit the Nyamirama Health Center.
• On March 10th Qdoba Mexican Grill has graciously offered to donate 20% of all proceeds towards the Nyamirama Health Center. Help raise publicity by “liking” Qdoba on Facebook and encourage all friends to come by and get some tasty Mexican food.

News from Partners in Health

• Ultrasound is continuously being brought to rural communities
• Rehabilitation services include treatment for spinal cord injuries, strokes, trauma patients and more
• Cholera vaccine is currently being developed; first round of vaccines will be distributed in March
• Solutions can be simple: peanuts are being cultivated and distributed as a means to combat both unemployment and nutritional issues in rural communities
• Interested in improving vision-care internationally? Take a look at volunteer opportunities through the nonprofit organization Unite for Sight!

The new Face Aids theme for the month of February is Food and Security, and we’ll be going into more detail about what exactly this entails at our next meeting on Wednesday, February 21st. Make sure to come out to learn more about the many aspects involved in the creation of a health center in Rwanda!

• On Monday, February 13th Students for Global Health is working with Slow Food Eugene to screen the documentary “The Dark Side of Chocolate.” Come learn about the inner-workings of the worldwide chocolate industry and enjoy fair trade chocolate and free condoms while you’re at it!
• On March 4th SGH is hosting a community-wide garage sale to benefit the Nyamirama Health Center. The garage sale location is tentatively set for 17th and Ferry. More details to come soon.
• April 16th-20th marks the Sustainability Center’s first ever Earth Week celebration! Tuesday, April 17th is going to be a day dedicated to Equity, Justice and Health, and SGH has been invited to participate! Bring any and all ideas for events and activities to our weekly meetings in Gerlinger 242.
• Reminder that we are looking into getting Students for Global Health sweatshirts. Anyone who might be interested should stay after the meeting next Wednesday to get more involved.

• Come out and show your support Students for Global Health on Monday, February 6th outside of the Duck Store. We’ll be tabling and selling baked goods along with FACE AIDs pins from 10 AM-2 PM!
• On Saturday, February 11th members of Students for Global Health will be volunteering at the Grassroots Garden that is affiliated with Food for Lane County. Any and all who would like to participate in an opportunity for some hands-on volunteering should stay after the meeting this Wednesday to discuss rides and car-pooling!
• On February 13th SGH is teaming up with University of Oregon student group Slow Food  to provide a screening of the documentary “The Dark Side of Chocolate.” This revealing documentary provides a first-hand look into the system of human trafficking and child labor in the Ivory Coast that fuels the international chocolate industry. More details to come.
• Once again the Western Regional International Health Care Conference is taking place at the University of Washington on April 27-29. Check out the website for conference details if it sounds like something you might be interested in attending.
