How will my phone make an impact?

Every cell phone given to community health workers connects distant patients to a medical clinic. A $10 cell phone will give50 families access to emergency medical care, health information, transport services, and clinic resources.

When your old phone is received by the recycling center, it is given a value. We’ll use this value to purchase appropriate, usable cell phones for community health workers at the medical clinics. The average donated phone in the US will allow us to purchase 2-3 cell phones for clinics.

Brian Concannon to Speak

The University series on Health and Human Rights presents Health as Human Right: persoectives from  Haitian Prisons.  Monday November 2, 2009 Brian Concannon Executive Director Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti will speak from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Living Learning Center Performance Hall. First Meeting

The first meeting of Fall term will be held Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Gerlinger 248 on the University of Oregon Campus. The meeting will kick off the new school year and welcome new students. The meeting will be informative and informal. We welcome anyone who is interested in global health and social justice issues.

  1. Welcome & Introductions. Our meeting was condensed into 20 minutes of announcements. 
  2. SLAVERY STILL EXISTS: After announcements, our group walked over to the PLC building to support the Slavery Still Exists lectures beginning at 7:30pm. The lectures taught students about the issue of human trafficking globally and locally. Human trafficking means the recruitment, harboring, or transportation of persons for the purposes of forced labor, indentured servitude or forced prostitution. An estimated 27 million human beings are enslaved in the world today. Of these 27 million, 80 percent are women and girls and up to 50 percent are children.

  2. Introductions (we had a lot of newbies thanks to publicity from the conference. yay!)
  3. We discussed HIV/AIDS in Africa Conference highlights and brainstormed ways to improve for next time.
